Familiar Faces Initiative

Familiar Faces Initiative is a collaborative effort focused on individuals who repeatedly come into contact with the criminal justice system. The initiative seeks to identify and address underlying factors—such as unmet social, behavioral health, and housing needs—that contribute to repeated system involvement. By emphasizing coordination across services and a person-centered approach, Familiar Faces aims to reduce unnecessary justice system involvement while promoting stability, dignity, and long-term community well-being.

BDEP Board member Maitreya Badami is currently conducting research on the Familiar Faces Initiative. Her work involves interviewing a wide range of people involved in the criminal justice system—including law enforcement officers, social workers, public defenders, and others—to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by individuals who frequently navigate the system.

Stay tuned to hear more about the Familiar Faces Initiative and Maitreya's research!
